1970s Oscar Schmidt 15-chord Autoharp

Purchased on eBay in very poor condition, this 'harp is currently undergoing complete refinishing and extensive restoration.

When it arrived, its tuning pins were rusted and gouged from being turned with pliers, and its ugly orange varnish was cracked in some places and crusty in others from years of neglect.  I started by removing all hardware except the bridge pins and stripping and sanding the body. Once the wood was bare and ready to accept a finish, I applied the designs you see below.

A Native American educator in Ketchikan, Alaska made me a gift of this Pacific Northwest Native design of a Rufous Hummingbird after a presentation I gave at the community's Alaska Hummingbird Festival.

I recreated the design as faithfully as possible in CorelDraw, sized it to fit the space under the strings on the 'harp, then printed a copy on tracing paper and transferred it to the stripped wood of the 'harp. I then painted the design by hand in traditional colors, using acrylic paints.

A Celtic knotwork rosette around the sound hole reflects my own ethnic and cultural heritage. The interlace pattern is based on a ring my husband gave me several years ago. I recreated the design in CorelDraw using techniques learned from George Bain's Celtic Art: The Methods of Construction, sized it to encircle the sound hole, and printed a stencil from an uncut sheet of label material. After stenciling the red portions, I painted the black line by hand.

To complement the designs, hide the laminated pin block, and give the 'harp a more finished look, I used the same paints to add red faux binding with a narrow black border around the edge of the 'harp.

A luthier friend recommended a tung oil finish, which I had pre-tested on scrap wood to ensure compatibility with the acrylic paint. The first 8 or 10 coats applied 1 to 3 days apart just soaked into the wood. Just as I got enough layers on to create a smooth, varnished look, the finish began to bubble and peel, forcing me to strip all my work so far - including the designs - and start from scratch. Photos of Phase II will be posted here - stay tuned!
